Pain Relief From Herniated Cervical Discs
A 41-year old woman came in for treatment in March 2010. She had chronic constant neck pain for the last 16-17 years due to a herniated cervical disc (C3 & C4) from a workplace injury. Her previous treatment regimen included massage and stretching which would provide temporary relief. The patient also had impaired neck mobility to the point that she was only able to rotate her neck less than halfway to her shoulder - at least 50% restriction.

Since the patient's disc injury was so old, I recommended once-a-week acupuncture sessions for at least 8 weeks and gave the patient supplements and topical suggestions to complement her acupuncture therapy. By the 5th acupuncture session, the patient reported 60% improvement and showed 10% increase in neck mobility. By the patient's 8th session, she had a 90% improvement in her neck rotation from left to right. She had almost no pain with periods of no pain at all and stated she hadn't felt that good since before injuring her neck in 1993.

The patient had plans to come in for periodic maintenance sessions but was unable to do this after both her and her spouse unfortunately lost their employment.
